Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez eyes return at Manchester City after returning from year-long injury

Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez has returned to full training and could make his Premier League return at the ground where he suffered a serious knee injury over a year ago.

The 25-year-old ruptured his cruciate ligament in Saints’ 4-1 defeat at Manchester City in April 5, 2014 - the same ground on which he also made his Southampton debut on the opening day of the 2012-13 season.

Rodriguez, who scored 17 goals in 40 appearances prior to his injury last term, was applauded by his teammates as he took to the training field at Southampton's base at Staplewood and he could make his return when his side travel to the Etihad on the final day of the campaign.

The attacker will feature for the club's U21s in the coming weeks, having worked tirelessly to return to his previous best.

In November 2013, Rodriguez broke into Roy Hodgson's England squad and made his debut against Chile and he was expected to be part of Hodgson's World Cup squad in 2014 had it not been for his injury.

England face the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia in a friendly and European Qualifier this June, and it remains to be seen whether he can reassert himself into Hodgson's plans before then.

Nevertheless, the former Burnley attacker's return comes as a timely boost to Saints boss Ronald Koeman, whose side can still secure a Europa League place with a top-six finish.

Koeman's side travel to Sunderland this weekend before games against Leicester and Aston Villa, and then City on May 24.

A number of national newspapers are reporting that the organisation’s flagship tournament will be rebranded as the Emirates FA Cup in a deal reported to be worth around £30m over the next three seasons.

The FA has so far resisted such a drastic change, preferring instead to use the phrases “in association with” or “sponsored by” in relation to their previous commercial deals with Littlewoods, Axa, E.ON and Budweiser.

The FA’s inability to fund such a sponsor for this year’s FA Cup following the expiration of the deal with Budweiser appears to have led to a change of heart from the FA board, although they are keen to stress no new deal has yet been finalised.

“We remain in discussion with a number of parties in relation to FA Cup partner opportunities,” it said ahead of its board meeting to discuss the matter later this week.

Bournemouth almost there

A point for Bournemouth at Charlton on Saturday will mathematically secure their place in the top flight for next season, but, with a goal difference significantly better than closest rivals Middlesbrough, only an unlikely final-day scenario of a Bournemouth defeat at Charlton and a Middlesbrough win at Brighton with a 19-goal swing will deny the Cherries.

Bournemouth, who have never played in the top flight of English football opened the scoring through Marc Pugh (29).

Matt Ritchie beat his man on the right and clipped over a cross for Pugh at the far post and he then worked himself some space before hammering a shot in off the far post.

And with just a minute to go to half-time Ritchie capped off a fine passing move as he powerfully sidefooted Yann Kermogant's pass home to give the Cherries a 2-0 lead.

Dorian Dervite was sent off for Bolton on 70 minutes after bringing down Wilson when he was through on goal, but Kermogant fired the resulting penalty over the bar.

But the hosts were not to be denied a third goal and Wilson (78) smashed in his 20th league goal of the season with a neat turn and right-foot finish into the bottom corner as the celebrations began for the home fans.

Having shown signs of nerves in a forgettable first half against Sheffield Wednesday last time out, Bournemouth wasted no time in attempting to break down their visitors.

Wilson weaved his way into the box inside the opening two minutes only for the legs of Adam Bogdan to deny him and the Hungarian goalkeeper then made a smart save to deny Ritchie from an angle.

Bolton, whose disgruntled fans who were quick to sing of their frustration at being forced to make the cross-country trip on a Monday night, were seeing plenty of the ball with Emile Heskey linking up well with in-form strike partner Adam Le Fondre. The pair both had sniffs of goal inside the first 25 minutes but could not only fire at Artur Boruc.

His opposite number then made two terrific saves in quick succession to deny the Cherries a 29th-minute opener. First he managed to get a hand to the ball as Wilson went to round him and then when the former Coventry forward pulled the ball back to Ritchie, Bogdan made a smart one-handed save low to his right.

Kermorgant and Tommy Elphick both missed chances before Bournemouth's top flight dreams moved a step closer to reality with an opener six minutes before the break.

And it was a goal to remember for the disbelieving supporters who had to be held back by the stewards after Pugh dragged Ritchie's cross to his left-hand side at the back post before smashing it across goal and into the top corner for his ninth of the campaign.

Premier League supporters tuning in to see what the fuss is all about ahead of August will have witnessed a 44th-minute goal that sums up when Bournemouth are all about. Wilson clipped a cross to the back post which Kermorgant effortlessly knocked down for Ritchie to drive, first time, into the bottom corner.

Their ecstatic fans were singing the Match of the Day theme tune and they were almost celebrating a goal fit to grace the show's goal of the season highlight reels when Kermorgant noticed Bogdan off his line 35 yards from goal but the keeper managed to tip the Frenchman's effort over.

Any hopes of a Bolton comeback were then put to bed with 20 minutes to go when Dervite saw red for hauling down Wilson inside the box as Bournemouth won their 16th spot kick of the season.

Fellow forward Kermorgant stepped up and smashed the resulting spot-kick into the stands but Wilson would get the goal his display deserved with 11 minutes to go. Andrew Surman's driving run ended with a cut back which Wilson gleefully converted to complete their stunning achievement.

Carver: Toon in relegation fight

Ayoze Perez’s first goal this calendar year was cancelled out by Nelson Oliveira on the stroke of half-time before Glyfi Sigurdsson and Jack Cork sealed the victory for the travelling Swans.

And, having started the game the brighter of the two sides, Carver was left disappointed as the defeat made him the first manager in the club’s history to lose seven consecutive Premier League games.

“It has been a (relegation) battle for four or five weeks now, and we know we’re in a battle,” he told Sky Sports. “We can’t hide from it, we’ve got to deal with it and get on with it.

“It’s always hard to take when you’ve lost a game, but I thought in the first half we actually did quite well.

“And, give or take five mad minutes just before half-time and just after half-time I think we could have got something out of the game.

“We were 1-0 up we had a great chance when Riviere had a header that gets saved by the goalkeeper and then we shot ourselves in the foot yet again just before half-time. It’s disappointing.

“We know for a fact that we don’t have the biggest of sides and we conceded with a set-play again.

“It’s not as though Swansea opened us up - they haven’t done that, it’s come from a set-play. We’ve got to deal with set-plays a lot better.

“I don’t think Tim Krul had a save to make other than picking the ball out of his net in the first half. He had a bit more to do in the second half and they caused us a few more problems."

Siem de Jong, who made his return to the Newcastle set up after eight months on the sidelines with a collapsed lung, scored a late consolation for the hosts, the one positive Carver took from the game as his side capitulated.

Despite this, Carver praised his side for the character they displayed in trying to get back into the game.

“The one positive I will take it is that we got Siem on the pitch and thankfully he scored,” Carver added.

“When you lose so many games your confidence is going to be hit, but not just the players, everyone around the stadium – they say here we go again.

“But what I will say is that there’s character in the dressing room, they stayed with it and kept going until the end. Unfortunately, it wasn't good enough.”

Jamie Carragher backs Jordan Henderson to become Liverpool great

Jamie Carragher believes Jordan Henderson will continue improving at Liverpool after the midfielder signed a new long-term deal.

Sky Sports pundit Carragher, who played 737 games for the club between 1997 and 2013, has also backed Henderson to replace Steven Gerrard as Liverpool captain after he leaves for the MLS at the end of the season.

Henderson, a £20m signing from Sunderland in 2011, is the latest first-team player to commit his future to Anfield, following Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho.

“This is big news," Carragher told Sky Sports. “I would imagine next season he’ll be the captain.

“He’s done an excellent job when Steven Gerrard’s been out, not just in his own performances, but the team’s results have been very good which always helps.

“He’s young, he’s English, he’s never injured and he’s improving all the time. He’s getting more goals and more assists, is becoming more influential in the team and I only see him getting better in the next four or five years.”

Liverpool are also understood to be close to completing new deals for Martin Skrtel and Jordan Ibe.

Swansea manager Garry Monk has told his players to end the season on a high by securing a top-eight finish in the Premier League.

The Swans only need to draw at Newcastle on Saturday to set a new club points record in the Premier League but Monk wants to achieve more than that with five games of the season remaining.

Swansea currently lie in eighth place on 47 points and Monk's ambition is for them to finish top of what many observers would consider the "best of the rest" with the top seven in the table having pulled clear.

"Considering everything, top 10 is a fantastic achievement - or it could be a fantastic achievement," Monk said.

"It would be extremely disappointing if we finish outside it now but the greedy side of you wants more.

"Ninth place is the best we've finished but to beat that and finish in eighth in that mini-league in the middle with Stoke, Palace, Everton, West Ham... it would be great to finish on top of that.

"It has to be part of the motivation and something I will remind the players as well."

Swansea, who were tipped for relegation in some quarters at the start of the season, missed out on their first opportunity to beat the 47-point mark last weekend when they lost 2-0 to Leicester, who were bottom of the league at the time.

"I put it to the players at the start about beating the club's points record," Monk said.

"I knew I could get the players committed to the work to get ourselves in this position, that is easy to say now but I truly believed with the quality we added in the summer to what we had then we could do something.

Arsenal can beat Chelsea at their own game, says Charlie Nicholas

Charlie Nicholas believes Arsenal need to play two holding midfield players if they want to beat Chelsea on Sunday.

The Gunners need to win in order to keep their faint Premier League title hopes alive, with Chelsea almost home and dry having established a 10-point lead with six games remaining.

Manchester United couldn’t capitalise on over 70 per cent possession as they lost 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Louis van Gaal opting for a 4-1-4-1 formation.

For all their time on the ball, United managed just two shots on target, and Nicholas believes there’s a better way to beat the champions-elect.

“Arsenal should play with two holding midfielders, because that’s exactly what Chelsea will do,” he told Sky Sports.

“They’ll come to the Emirates and they’ll stick Nemanja Matic in there and they might stick John Obi Mikel or Kurt Zouma in there too, and Arsenal need to counter that.

“That might mean playing Aaron Ramsey slightly out of position, slightly right of Francis Coquelin, who has been very impressive lately, and I’d just ask him to sit in there when Arsenal don’t have the ball.

“Wenger might have to consider sacrificing Santi Cazorla for that to work, but I’d just like two midfielders to sit and try and control the middle, where Cesc Fabregas will be, and Eden Hazard - the ultimate danger - will be floating about too.”

Nicholas is unconcerned by Arsenal’s tame performance in beating Reading 2-1 after extra-time in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final, claiming the Gunners are in their best shape for some time.

He said: “This is the best Arsenal have been playing in five or six years, and I think the players sense that. The squad’s got its best balance and the best competitive edge for years.

Holders Arsenal reached a record 19th FA Cup final after two goals from Alexis Sanchez sealed victory over Reading in extra-time.

Sanchez gave the Premier League side a 39th-minute lead from close range before Garath McCleary volleyed home an equaliser shortly after the break.

Reading needed the post and keeper Adam Federici to keep the scores level as the game required an extra 30 minutes to decide the outcome.

The Australian keeper was at fault as Sanchez's effort spilled through his grasp and rolled in and although Reading pushed for an equaliser Arsenal held on.

The Gunners will now face the winners of Sunday's other semi-final between Aston Villa and Liverpool (15:00 BST kick-off) as they look to lift a record 12th FA Cup.

Their hopes of the double continue to look unrealistic though, with Chelsea recording a potentially defining 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League.

Sanchez has 22 goals this season since his summer arrival from Barcelona and, with 36 places separating these two sides, he was the difference at a sunny Wembley.

The first half went to form with Arsenal dominating their Championship opposition and enjoying 74% possession.

Per Mertesacker had seen his early header from Mesut Ozil's corner well saved by Federici, low to his left, and at the other end Jordan Obita's fierce half-volley from 25 yards was straight at Wojciech Szczesny.

Reading forward Jamie Mackie was unlucky to have been ruled offside when clean through before Arsenal scored the opener.

Ozil unlocked the Royals' defence with a wonderful pass to Sanchez, who, after controlling and turning inside, prodded past Federici from close range.

Reading levelled nine minutes after the break with McCleary volleying home Pavel Pogrebnyak's cross from six yards. Although Szczesny got to the ball, goal-line technology confirmed it had crossed the line

Federici, who would later leave the pitch in tears, produced a wonderful one-handed save to claw out Gabriel's header as Arsenal looked to get themselves back in front against a Reading side who were growing in confidence.

Stoke will be without on-loan winger Victor Moses, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.

Marc Wilson is doubtful after injuring his hip against West Ham, while Peter Odemwingie returned to training this week after nearly eight months out.

Midfielder Victor Wanyama is suspended for Southampton after receiving his 10th booking of the season.

Whatever the outcome of Southampton's season, it has been a success, but Ronald Koeman is challenging his players to mark it with a European place. Even if they finish seventh, it will still be their highest-ever Premier League finish and they have already matched last season's points total with six games to play. No-one would have predicted their current scenario back in August.

It has been built on a tremendous defensive foundation. Only 22 goals conceded is the best record in all four divisions and they have already kept 15 clean sheets. Even after the injury to goalkeeper Fraser Forster, Kelvin Davies has come into the side to maintain that record.

They have recently struggled at the other end of the pitch, scoring only seven times in their last 10 games - that will need to improve in their remaining games to get above Liverpool and Tottenham. In fact, their next game at home to Spurs, when they welcome back former manager Mauricio Pochettino, will be huge if they can beat Stoke.

Mark Hughes' team have taken only one point from the last 12 and are on their longest winless league run of the season. In general, they have been another success story, given their financial restrictions. The manager's recent four-year deal has only added to the club's stability.

However, he will be determined for the season to not just fade away. It can be difficult for players mentally in a situation of total safety. That's why managers continue to set targets. In Hughes' case, he wants to better last season's record Premier League points total of 50.

Stoke are also looking for successive top-half finishes in the top division for the first time in 40 years, which would only further enhance the job Hughes has done in the Potteries.

Southampton's target is far more attractive, but many a mission has come unstuck at the Britannia Stadium over the years.

Wayne Rooney set for deeper Man Utd role at Chelsea

Louis van Gaal says he will consider starting Wayne Rooney in defensive midfield for Manchester United at Chelsea on Saturday after losing four players to injury.

Michael Carrick misses out at Stamford Bridge with the calf problem that forced him off towards the end of Sunday's derby win over Manchester City, and Van Gaal will also be without Phil Jones (ankle), Daley Blind (ankle) and Marcos Rojo (adductor).

That gives the United manager problems at the back, with Jonny Evans still banned, although left-back Luke Shaw is available for the first time since last month's FA Cup defeat to Arsenal.

Paddy McNair is the obvious choice to partner Chris Smalling at centre-half, but the absences of Blind and Carrick leave United without a recognised holding midfielder.

That could mean a role for Rooney at the base of Van Gaal's midfield, a move which would open the door for either Robin van Persie or Radamel Falcao to come in up front.

Neither player has started a game since February, but Falcao has featured regularly as a substitute and Van Persie has been back in training for more than a week after recovering from ankle ligament damage.

"It is the worst scenario," Van Gaal said. "Marcos and Phil can both play left central defender and Jonny Evans is also suspended so I do not have many choices.

"Daley Blind and Michael Carrick could play as a holding midfield player and I don't have another option, or I have to play Wayne Rooney again in that position. It is a puzzle."

Mohamed Fofana retains hope of Mali recall

Defender Mohamed Fofana has told BBC Sport "I've not closed my international chapter with Mali" despite being overlooked for more than three years.

The 30-year-old France-born player's last cap came in January 2012.

"If I continue to do well with my club Reims I know I will get another opportunity," he said.

"Everyone knows how dedicated and passionate I have been for my country over the years so I would love to continue to play for the Eagles."

A return to the Mali squad would go some way to ease Fofana's painful memories of his last involvement, when he suffered a thigh injury during a friendly four days before the start of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and was ruled out the tournament.

Since then he has been unable to force his way back into the set-up and was ignored by former Mali coach Henry Kasperczak.

However, Fofana insisted he "holds no grudges against the former coach" and is only interested in looking forward.

"I'm not disappointed, it's all part of football," he said. "I'm in the prime of my career now and I want to kick on again, so I can only hope and wait."

Fofana admits he is feeling more optimistic about his chances following the appointment of Alain Giresse for a second spell as Mali boss - the former France midfielder gave Fofana his international debut in 2011.

And he would relish the chance to be part of the 65-year-old's plans for the 2017 Nations Cup qualifiers, which start in June.

"His return gives me hope but once again my club performance will be the yardstick for selection," Fofana said. "I'm not going to give up hope. I don't want to accept it that younger players could keep me out.

"I followed Mali's performance at the last Nations Cup and I think they had a relatively successful campaign and I hope to re-join the group as soon as possible."
