Should Manchester City keep Yaya Toure and James Milner?

After a disappointing title defence, Manchester City are expected to be active in the summer transfer window – but can they afford to let Yaya Toure and James Milner leave?
Toure has been criticised this season and linked with a move to Inter Milan, while Milner is out of contract in the summer and could switch to a Premier League rival.
With the help of WhoScored.com, we check the stats to compare how Manchester City performed with and without the pair…
Despite reported interest from former City boss Roberto Mancini at Inter Milan, Toure’s agent recently told Sky Sports News HQ the midfielder would be staying with City. However, although a rating of 7.40 from WhoScored - enough to rank third at the club - certainly suggests he has offered plenty to the cause this season, Toure's performances have undoubtedly dropped from a fantastic 2013/14 campaign.
He has had a direct hand in just 11 league goals this season - of which just one has been an assist - compared to a massive 29 last time around and questions have been raised as to his application.

That doesn't change the fact that Manuel Pellegrini's side began to unravel when Toure left for the African Cup of Nations in January, with City dropping points courtesy of draws rather than defeats. City may have lost just one of the 11 matches he didn't start in the league compared to six when he did, but they also saw their win ratio drop substantially - from 70.4 per cent to 45.5 per cent. Replacing Toure's influence would be easier said than done.
James Milner
Another player that may have waved goodbye to the City fans for the final time this season is Milner, whose contract at the club is set to expire. The England international is a fan favourite at the Etihad - and has been wherever he’s played – while his experience of top-flight football is vast.
If Sunday's win over Southampton was to be Milner's last for City, he signed off in fitting fashion, teeing up States-bound Frank Lampard to score in his final Premier League appearance. It was Milner’s seventh assist of the season - enough to equal the tally of David Silva - to accompany five league goals, despite the fact that just 18 of his 32 appearances came from the start.
With City losing just two of the 18 matches Milner started in 2014/15, and five of the 20 he didn't, it's obvious he still has a worth to the team. The midfielder will feel that he deserves more playing time, however, and following an increase in his WhoScored.com rating from a disappointing 2013/14 campaign of just 6.59 to 7.02, Milner has every right to feel that he should be a regular starter in the Premier League.

Can We Combine Danny And Theo?

Brendan Rodgers is an embarrassment. He is an embarrassment both on and off the field. For the umpteenth time in his short managerial life he proudly played himself up just before the inevitable almighty fall. His '150 percent certain to remain manager next season' was typically succeeded by a 6-1 hammering at the hands of Stoke. To be abundantly clear, this was the worst defeat for Liverpool since 1963. Also disgraceful was how he approached the match vs Real Madrid earlier in the season - basically giving up before even taking to the field at the Bernabeu. Liverpool fans remember going into major stadiums with the confidence of winning or fighting for a draw but Rodgers has sucked that out of us. We remember Rafa's teams winning against plenty of the continental heavyweights and if not winning, running them bloody close. But more than anything else, for the first time in many a season there seem to be two realistic, brilliant candidates available to us. Rafa has proven himself all over again (with Chelsea and Napoli) and clearly loves Liverpool Football Club. Jurgen Klopp is a genius manager who can take Liverpool back amongst the elite. Both men bring tons of experience, silverware, tactical nous and the ability to attract top-level players from across the world. It would be a major mistake on the part of FSG if they were to let go of this opportunity.

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss embarrassed by Stoke loss

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers accepted his future at the club is in doubt after Steven Gerrard's final match ended in a humiliating defeat. The Reds said goodbye to captain Gerrard with a 6-1 thrashing at Stoke to finish sixth in the Premier League. "I've always said if the owners want me to go, then I go," said Rodgers, who has won two of his last nine games. "For everybody connected with Liverpool, we are all embarrassed by that result." It was the first time in 52 years the Reds had let in six goals in the league but Rodgers, 42, insisted he still has "a lot to offer the club", despite winning no silverware during his three years in charge. Play media Jump media playerMedia player helpOut of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue. Rodgers under huge pressure - Shearer Liverpool must also now go through two qualifying rounds if they are to compete in the group stage of next season's Europa League. "A lot has happened this year which has made the job difficult," added Rodgers, who guided the Reds to second place last season. "Last season, when things were working well, we had the support of everyone but performances like today do not help that and I fully understand that. "The fans deserve an apology. They were angry at half-time - and rightly so - because that was awful, absolutely awful. "They have every right to be angry and frustrated and of course I take full responsibility for that as the manager." Liverpool under Rodgers 2012-13 season: Seventh in league; fourth round FA Cup; fourth round League Cup; last-32 Europa League 2013-14 season: Second in league; fifth round FA Cup; third round League Cup 2014-15 season: Sixth in league; semi-final FA Cup; semi-final League Cup; group stage Champions League; last-32 Europa League Rodgers faces a big rebuilding job in the summer and, as well as Gerrard joining LA Galaxy, there is speculation about the future of young forward Raheem Sterling. Rodgers dropped Sterling, 20, to the bench at the Britannia Stadium and Liverpool found themselves trailing 5-0 at the interval after a terrible display. All five goals came in the space of 23 minutes from Mame Biram Diouf, twice, Jonathan Walters, former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam and Steven Nzonzi. Gerrard marked his farewell with a consolation goal but there was still time for ex-Liverpool striker Peter Crouch to head a sixth for Stoke five minutes after coming on as a substitute. Asked about his rebuilding plans, Rodgers added: "There's an awful lot of work to do and the job is to now go and fix that, and make sure we come back with a motivation greater than ever to push on next season. "We've finished the season in sixth, which is where we deserve to finish. "We have to now start, today, on the climb to get back up again."

Premier League predictions: Lawro v DJ Fresh and Adam F

Make your predictions here A correct result (picking a win, draw or defeat) is worth ONE point. The exact score earns THREE points. Last weekend Lawro got one correct result from 10 Premier League games, with no perfect scores. His score of one point was his worst of the season and saw him beaten by actor Thomas Turgoose, who picked five correct results, with one perfect score. That gave him a total of seven points. Lawro and WWE wrestling star Wade 'Bad News' Barrett both went for an Arsenal win in the Gunners' re-arranged game with Sunderland on Wednesday. It ended 0-0, meaning nobody picked up any extra points. We are keeping a record of the totals for Lawro and his guests (below), and you can see the final table of how the Premier League would look if all of Lawro's predictions were correct at the bottom of the page.

Football And Alcohol: Angels And Demons Football's relationship with alcohol contains obvious links to dark addiction, but booze has also led to some extraordinary anecdotes. Van Gaal wasn't the first to succumb...

It isn't big or clever to do daft things when you're drunk. But it is, very often, extremely funny. The most recent example of course came at the Manchester United end of season awards, when Louis van Gaal seemingly took full advantage of the refreshments on offer before taking the microphone to deliver a speech, that has in various quarters been described as 'inspirational', 'entertaining' and 'p**sed'. Football has a complicated relationship with booze. It - or more specifically addiction to it - has destroyed lives and careers, from George Best, to Paul Gascoigne, to Paul McGrath, to any number of other players whose relationship with the bottle has soured after their careers ended. When the game stops the demons become louder, and a lads-will-be-lads culture can give way to a problem. Of course as with most things, this is an issue seen through the prism of football, but a part of wider society. The game itself has a curious attitude to alcohol, not least in how it's consumed at games. You're allowed to buy as much sauce as you like in stadia, but not drink the stuff in sight of the field of play. Oh no, God forbid. At some grounds this rule is taken so literally that any area in the concourse below the stands from which you can see the pitch is marked off, accompanied by a sign warning you in the sternest possible terms that you must drink your watery cup of grog five yards to the left. Meanwhile, at rugby games you're allowed to merrily sink ale after ale in the stands while singing that appropriated slavery protest song, which is fine because there's never been any problem with rugby fans doing despicable things while drunk. That said, we've all stood next to a swaying, glass-eyed, fleshy receptacle for a gallon of Stella at a game, the sort of beered-up gibbon who breathes Belgian fumes in your face before informing you that Player X is "s**t" 23 times throughout the game, even though Player X was sold last summer. Their mate, having drunk a little more sensibly, will look slightly embarrassed then usher them out at half-time saying "Come on Smiffy, let's get you a coffee." Still, as with most things, bad and good has come from the combination of grape and football, the latter primarily through the assorted amusing tales that have come from it. The most famous ones tend to come in similar circumstances to Van Gaal's big night, when players/managers/officials have taken a glass or two then appeared in public. For example take Stuart McCall celebrating Bradford's promotion by having a few cans and climbing atop a car, only to return from whence he came rather quickly, or Delia Smith hitting the Pinot and rather ill-advisedly deciding then was a good time to grab a microphone and issue a rallying cry to the Norwich fans. Then there are the stories of booze-inspired violence, quite often on pre-season tours, notably Alan Shearer and Keith Gillespie settling their differences with a bout of beery boxing in Dublin, or Craig Bellamy taking a golf club to a sleeping John Arne Riise. One of football's better chants over the years has been 'Niall Quinn's Disco Pants', which stemmed from an alcohol-soaked trip away to Italy with Manchester City in 1992. After a few sherbets Quinn got into an enthusiastic disagreement with Steve McMahon which, as did many things with Steve McMahon, turned physical and resulted in Quinn's shirt becoming ripped and bloodied. Not wanting this to ruin his night, Quinn headed to a local discotheque and removed his soiled top to gain entry, meaning he was clad only in a pair of high-waisted cut-off jeans, in which he danced rather enthusiastically, not realising a group of delighted City fans were watching on. Therefore, the glorious chant 'Niall Quinn's disco pants are the best/They go up from his arse to his chest/They are better than Adam and the Ants/Niall Quinn's disco pants' was born. It was even recorded and released as a single by some Sunderland fans from fanzine 'A Love Supreme'. It reached 59 in the charts. An evening taking drink often ends in a takeaway, and footballers are no different. After one such night on the tiles Nicklas Bendtner (you knew he was going to pop up at some point) found himself in a pizza shop but without cash, and after his card was declined he was unfortunately captured on a cameraphone drunkenly trying to reason/barter with the proprietors, but to no avail. And there's the tale of Peter Crouch, told by the Guardian's Sean Ingle, who reportedly entered a fast food establishment while in his cups, demanded some nachos, refused to pay for these nachos and when the nachos were handed over, ate all the nachos while saying "Crouchie's having his nachos." As well as various extra-curricular activities, pop has been used tactically as well. You'll be familiar with Brian Clough insisting his Nottingham Forest players get boozy the night before the 1978 League Cup final (which Forest won), and when Herbert Chapman wanted to sign David Jack from Bolton in 1928, he employed the staff in the bar where negotiations were taking place. "This is Mr Wall, my assistant," he told the barman, before the Bolton delegation arrived. "He will drink whisky and dry ginger. I will drink gin and tonic. We shall be joined by guests. They will drink whatever they like. See that our guests are given double of everything, but Mr Wall's whisky and dry ginger will contain no whisky, and my gin and tonic will contain no gin." The Bolton delegation of course quite quickly got absolutely trousered, and Chapman came away with a very reasonable deal. However, perhaps the best story involving the drink and transfers comes from Ladislao Kubala, the great Barcelona striker who defected from Hungary in the early 1950s. When he first came to Spain both Barca and Real Madrid wanted him, but José Samitier, the former Barca manager then working for them as a scout, was determined to get his man. Real had made Kubala an offer, but Samitier got his man nice and drunk, poured him onto a train and took him to Barcelona instead. "Kubala came to Spain thinking he was going to be signed by Real Madrid," former Barca president Enrique Llaudet is quoted as saying in Jimmy Burns' book 'Barca: A People's Passion.' "But because he was half-p**sed he didn't really know whether he was coming or going...there was a real confusion on the train and Kubala...suddenly turns to Samitier and says 'Hey, we go to Madrid, don't we?' 'Sure we are,' says Samitier. 'But the sign says 'Barcelona'' insists Kubala. And then Samitier says 'Don't you worry. We are going to the club now.' And that is how he brought us Kubala." Maybe Van Gaal should try that with Raheem Sterling. We could go on and on and on. When football and alcohol combine, havoc can ensue, and so can entertainment. But drink sensibly, kids.

The He's One Of Ours Gossip Man Utd want Harry Kane as well as Gareth Bale, Chelsea are tracking Pedro, Toby Alderweireld and several others, while Andre Ayew is heading to England.

UNITED TARGET KANE AND BALE Louis van Gaal wants to sign a forward, a right-back, a centre-half and a central midfielder this summer, according to the Daily Mail, and top of his list of targets is allegedly Tottenham's Harry Kane. The 21-year-old only signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract at White Hart Lane in February, but the Mail says Manchester United are willing to pay in excess of £45million to lure him up north, despite also retaining an interest in Burnley's Danny Ings. The story coincides with Mauricio Pochettino insisting no player can be sure of their future as he looks to rebuild the squad, and United's £150million-plus transfer budget could well have Spurs supporters fearing Kane following in the footsteps of Teddy Sheringham, Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov. Real Madrid fans, however, may be less concerned by reports that Gareth Bale remains a target for the Red Devils despite their capture of Memphis Depay. The Daily Mirror claims it is Bale, not Kane, that is top of the club's list of transfer targets and that Van Gaal is willing to sell both Robin van Persie and Angel Di Maria to land the Wales forward this summer. United 'have received sufficient encouragement' to move for the 25-year-old but will need to reduce their existing wage bill to afford Bale's demands, according to the newspaper. Van Persie is out of contract at the end of next season and will not be offered a new deal, while Di Maria only joined the club last summer, also from Real Madrid, and could apparently join Paris Saint-Germain on a season-long loan with a 'fixed obligation' for the French champions to buy the Argentine at the end. United, could, however lose up to £15million on their record signing, with PSG only willing to pay around £45million. PEDRO AND ALDERWEIRELD AMONG CHELSEA TARGETS 'Atletico Madrid are attempting to ward off Chelsea's interest in their forwards Antoine Griezmann and Koke by raising the buy-out clauses to nearer £100m in the new contracts to be offered to both players this summer,' writes Dominic Fifield in The Guardian. While Koke is said to be happy in Spain, Chelsea's chances of landing Griezmann could be helped by the fact that Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes is acting in an advisory capacity for the France international. The Atletico pair are not the only players on the Blues' list of transfer targets, however, with the Guardian claiming Barcelona's Pedro, Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin and Toby Alderweireld - on loan from Atletico and another of Mendes' clients - plus Stoke's Asmir Begovic, QPR's Rob Green and goalkeeper Vicente Guaita are also potential new signings for the Premier League champions. Mourinho had recently said he wanted to keep his squad together over the summer, but the Guardian claims Petr Cech, Filipe Luís and Didier Drogba are expected to leave Stamford Bridge, freeing up space for the new arrivals. LEADING TRIO TO COMPETE FOR AYEW Marseille president Vincent Labrune admitted earlier this week that Ghana striker Andre Ayew is almost certain to move in the summer as "we can't offer him the kind of money English clubs can offer". It was somewhat inevitable, then, that our newspapers have picked out some of the country's best-supported clubs as being among those interested in signing the 25-year-old this summer. The Independent listed Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal among his potential suitors earlier in the week, but the Daily Star has now added United to the mix, with a rather confident headline: 'REVEALED: Ghana star will join Man Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool this summer'. "We hope he has a great career that he deserves in England or somewhere else," said Labrune. Somewhere else? Somewhere else doesn't get clicks, Mr Labrune.

16 Conclusions: Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

A 1-1 away draw at Stamford Bridge should never be considered a bad result, but Brendan Rodgers must be cursing his team's inability to take advantage of Chelsea's midweek holiday. Some of Jose Mourinho's players had only returned to training on Friday afternoon and it showed, particularly after the break. Liverpool are now six points behind Manchester United with two games to play. They need United to lose at home to Arsenal and away at Hull whilst they beat Crystal Palace and Stoke. They also need to effect a 14-goal swing for good measure. Sorry, but it's just not going to happen. Not a chance. One win from eight against the top four sides for Liverpool this season underlines how far they must travel to get back amongst the Premier League elite. Rodgers must now accept that he has taken his side significantly backwards over the course of this season, having done the opposite in the previous campaign. The benefits of Champions League football are vastly reduced if you give it up so limply after one season. * One suspects Mourinho was privately frustrated by the lethargy of Chelsea's performance - that's the mindset of a perfectionist. It does, however, continue his astonishing record against the best teams in the Premier League. Since the beginning of last season, Chelsea's record against Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool reads: Played 16, won nine, drawn seven, lost 0. They have conceded only eight goals in those 16 matches. This was not a day to learn anything new about Chelsea other than the emergence of one of their young starlets, but their last game of the season against a top four rival ends in the same manner as all the others. Unbeaten, as ever.

Chelsea v Liverpool: Classic matches including ghost goals and slip-ups

The recent history of Chelsea versus Liverpool has seen some of the most dramatic matches in English football over the past decade. From Champions League ‘ghost goals’ to Premier League title twists, the two teams have brought us some truly dramatic moments. Here we recall just some of the stand-out matches between the teams dating back to an Anfield encounter that Jose Mourinho can’t seem to forget… Premier League Relegation 15/16 Watford 8/13 Bournemouth evens West Brom 5/1 Football Betting Bet £5 Get £20 Free Chelsea vs Liverpool May 10, 2015, 3:30pm Live on Sky Sports 1 HD Get Sky Sports Get a Sky Sports pass Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea, May 3, 2005 Such is Mourinho’s enduring frustration at Luis Garcia’s infamous ‘ghost goal’, which settled this Champions League semi-final in 2005, that he referenced it as recently as Chelsea’s trip to Liverpool in November. “It doesn’t affect me, because I don’t play, but we’ve seen in the past how the Anfield pressure affects some people,” he said. “Goals that are not goals, penalties that are not penalties.” After a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg, Chelsea found themselves 1-0 down inside four minutes at Anfield when Milan Baros beat Petr Cech to Steven Gerrard’s flicked pass and Garcia steered home. William Gallas attempted to clear the ball off the line, but the Blues’ complaints fell on deaf ears and, despite pushing for an equaliser and decisive away goal in the second half, the hosts held on.

Nathaniel Clyne 'happy at Southampton' and waiting on deal

Nathaniel Clyne says he is happy to stay at Southampton, despite reports linking him with a move this summer.
The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season, with talks over a new deal yet to bear fruit.
Chelsea and Manchester United have been credited with interest in the right-back, who has made 101 appearances for the south coast club since making his debut three years ago.

Ahead of Saturday's match at Sunderland, Saints boss Ronald Koeman hinted he wanted an answer one way or another, saying: "In football, if you go in the last season of your contract, we don't like that."
Clyne told the Southampton Daily Echo: "I am enjoying my football for Southampton, playing week-in, week-out and it is an up-and-coming club. I am happy playing for Southampton and happy to stay at Southampton as well.
"My agent is negotiating, so I will just leave it with my agent and I am just going to concentrate on playing my football."

FL72 review: Peter Beagrie on Derby, Norwich, Mk Dons and more

Each week, Sky Sports experts review the Football League action on FL72. This week, Sky Sports' Football League expert Peter Beagrie looks back at the major talking points from a two dramatic final days of the regular season... Derby’s painful demise Brentford v Middlesbrough Brentford 7/5 Middlesbrough 19/10 Draw 23/10 Football Betting Bet £5 Get £20 Free Derby saw their play-off hopes crushed by out-of-form Reading who ended a run of four Championship defeats by pulling off a shock 3-0 win Derby saw their play-off hopes crushed by out-of-form Reading who ended a run of four Championship defeats by pulling off a shock 3-0 win Derby's defensive deficiencies, which we spoke about before the Reading game, were apparent on Saturday and they came back to haunt them once again. Derby were a well-oiled machine and now the wheels have well and truly fallen off. They lost some top players and game managers in important positions but it was their defensive frailties which cost them again because they kept on scoring goals through Darren Bent and Tom Ince. It’s painful to watch Derby fall out. There were mitigating circumstances, Ipswich had the hardest game on paper but Derby had all the pressure.

Brazilian youngster Adryan admits he may quit Leeds United Read more at http://talksport.com/football/brazilian-youngster-adryan-admits-he-may-quit-leeds-united-150504145516#oC0TU4hgCvzr6wbL.99

Brazilian playmaker Adryan has revealed he may return to Flamengo when his loan deal with Leeds expires. The 20-year-old moved to Elland Road last summer, with the Championship club having the right to sign the attacking midfielder permanently for £3m at the end of the current campaign. However, with his loan deal now coming to a close, the Brazil Under-20 international has admitted he may not stay at the English club. "I've learned a lot here [at Leeds] and at Cagliari," Adryan told Globoesporte. "Now I do not know what will happen. In case I go back to Flamengo, I am more mature, better prepared. I've changed for the better. "I never said I would rule out a return to Flamengo. However, I can't rule out continuing here for longer. "I will not discuss it because the decision involves others. I do not know my future. It depends on who appears, but I am a Flamengo player. I'll never rule out a return to Flamengo. "I have one more year, a year and a half contract with them. I don't rule it out. We'll see."

John Carver: Can Newcastle United boss keep Magpies up?

The media room at Leicester City's King Power Stadium has played host to so much pure theatre this week that is fast becoming the Premier League's very own Broadway - but it may be the place where the curtain came down on any chance John Carver had of staying at Newcastle United. Foxes manager Nigel Pearson's description of a journalist as "an ostrich" made headlines worldwide but was settled with a handshake and a public apology in front of the cameras. Newcastle caretaker manager Carver's savage attack on his own players will not be resolved so easily after a post-match scattergun assault following the 3-0 loss to Leicester that leaves them deep in trouble. The highlight, if it can be called that, was Carver's criticism of Mike Williamson that came accompanied by the suggestion the defender got himself sent off deliberately to escape the pressure of a relegation fight. Carver did not so much conduct a news conference as read out a resignation letter. If he survives until the end of the season - and to replace him now would hint at the sudden panic inside St James' Park - he will surely not last much longer. So what next for Carver? And what next for Newcastle United? Is Carver out of his depth? Mike Williamson Mike Williamson was sent off after just over an hour Carver's condemnation of Newcastle's players may make for compelling viewing and listening, demonstrate searing honesty and play to the gallery of fans, some of whom called the players "cowards" as they boarded the team coach. But it is a policy that goes beyond high-risk. He is right to question his players after their recent performances but Carver also needs to keep the squad onside for three more vital games. To even hint that Williamson may have deliberately engineered his own red card is an incendiary claim to make about any professional footballer and is sure to reverberate around Newcastle's dressing room. Read these quotes and decide: "I spoke to Mike Williamson at half-time and had a few choice words. I thought he'd done that on purpose - it looks like he did. The ball was off the pitch - he had no need to make the challenge. He will miss two games now. Is it an easy way out?" And there's more: "On a scale of one to 10, it's a minus 10. I can't accept it. I wish the players had as much determination and fight as I had. We can talk about systems and players but if we're not willing to compete, get your head onto the ball and risk getting an injury, you won't get anywhere."
