Mata hails Herrera understanding

Herrera struggled for starts in the first half of his debut season at Old Trafford and by the time he finally did break into the team towards the end of February, Mata had lost his place.

The duo have started alongside side each other in the last three games, however, as United have recovered from their FA Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal to climb into third spot in the Premier League with victories over Aston Villa, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Herrera followed up Mata's brace against Liverpool with a double of his own against Villa, making it just one defeat in the eight games they have started together in total, and the pair are expected to continue their blossoming partnership against Manchester City this weekend.

Mata told MUTV: "I think [our success playing together] is because of the relationship we've had over the years and because we understand football and life in more or less the same way.

"I think we play well together because we understand each other and sometimes without speaking or looking we know where we're going to pass or where we're going to move on the pitch.
