PFA awards: Kane, Hazard, De Gea, Coutinho on both shortlists

Tottenham's Harry Kane is one of four players to make the shortlist for both the Professional Footballers' Association Player and Young Player of the Year prize.

Manchester United keeper David De Gea, Chelsea forward Eden Hazard and Liverpool attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho could also win both awards.

Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea's Diego Costa complete the senior list.

Manchester City's Lucy Bronze, winner in 2014, is on the women's shortlist.

Hazard makes the senior shortlist for the third successive year, having previously lost out to Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez.

Bale's triumph in 2013 meant he emulated Andy Gray in 1977 and 2007 winner Cristiano Ronaldo by winning both prizes.

De Gea is aiming to become the first goalkeeper to win the award since Peter Shilton in 1977.

Liverpool's Raheem Sterling and Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois have been nominated for the Young Player prize.

Chelsea Ladies are the only Women's Super League side to have two players nominated in Eniola Aluko and South Korea international Ji So-yun. Birmingham's Karen Carney, Arsenal's Kelly Smith and Notts County's Jess Clarke are also named.

Leah Williamson, who kept her nerve in unique circumstances to score the penalty that sent England into the European Under-19 Championship, is included in a five-person shortlist for the Young Player award.

No-one from WSL champions Liverpool has been nominated.

Luke Shaw admits to frustrating first season at Manchester United

Luke Shaw admits he has suffered a frustrating first season at Manchester United as he prepares to face boyhood club Chelsea.

The England full-back moved to Old Trafford in a £27m deal from Southampton last summer, but poor form and injury problems have restricted him to just 17 appearances this season and the 19-year-old admits he has struggled to adapt to the huge expectations at United.

"It’s been a frustrating one because of the injuries I’ve picked up but I’m loving it," he told Match of the Day magazine.

"If I was to write a school report on my first season here I’d give myself a C-. You don’t realise just how big Man United is until you’re actually here – it’s frightening! It is the biggest club around."

Shaw hopes to be involved in Saturday's trip to league leaders Chelsea, who he grew up supporting, having missed the 4-2 win over Manchester City with an injury picked up against Arsenal in the FA Cup.

United will bid for their seventh straight win live on Sky Sports 1 on Saturday as they consolidate their position in the top four and Shaw is desperate to play at Stamford Bridge.

"I used to watch Chelsea every week. It was really good when I got to play at Stamford Bridge, I would say that’s my favourite away stadium to go to. Chelsea is one of the first games I look for when the new fixtures come out.

"I haven’t scored yet so I don’t know. If my first goal was to come against Chelsea I’m not sure what I’d do."

Paris St-Germain beat Bastia 4-0 to win the French League Cup

Strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani both scored twice as Paris St-Germain beat Bastia to win the French League Cup.

Swede Ibrahimovic put the defending champions in the lead from the penalty spot after Bastia's captain Sébastien Squillaci was sent off.

He scored again before half-time as PSG made the most of their numerical advantage.

Second-half substitute Cavani's two late goals sealed victory.

It was the fifth league cup triumph for the Parisian side, who play Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in Paris on Wednesday.

They will be without Ibrahimovic, who is banned for the first leg after a red card against Chelsea in the last round.

The 33-year-old opened the scoring following Squillaci's red card on 19 minutes.

The former Arsenal defender made a clumsy challenge on Ezequiel Lavezzi who was clear on goal

Ibrahimovic got his second 20 minutes later as Bastia failed to clear a cross, the unmarked Swede controlled the ball on his chest before rifling a shot to the bottom left hand corner.

Javier Pastore and Lavezzi both had chances early in the second half before Cavani was brought on for the latter.

Mathieu Peybernes had Bastia's best chance but his back-heel was saved on the line by Thiago Silva.

Cavani, who scored twice in last season's League Cup triumph against Lyon, was soon on the score sheet at the Stade de France.

He met Serge Aurier's cross to place a pin-point header past Alphonse Areola, who is on loan from Paris St-Germain.

And then in injury time he latched on to Ibrahimovic's perfectly weighted through ball to finish past Areola.

Bastia's Brandao came on as a late substitute. The striker has not played since August after being jailed and banned for six months for a headbutt on PSG midfielder Thiago Motta.

Mata hails Herrera understanding

Herrera struggled for starts in the first half of his debut season at Old Trafford and by the time he finally did break into the team towards the end of February, Mata had lost his place.

The duo have started alongside side each other in the last three games, however, as United have recovered from their FA Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal to climb into third spot in the Premier League with victories over Aston Villa, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Herrera followed up Mata's brace against Liverpool with a double of his own against Villa, making it just one defeat in the eight games they have started together in total, and the pair are expected to continue their blossoming partnership against Manchester City this weekend.

Mata told MUTV: "I think [our success playing together] is because of the relationship we've had over the years and because we understand football and life in more or less the same way.

"I think we play well together because we understand each other and sometimes without speaking or looking we know where we're going to pass or where we're going to move on the pitch.

Arsenal 4-1 Liverpool: Olivier Giroud scores again as Arsenal dent Liverpool top-four hopes

Arsenal dealt Liverpool’s top-four hopes a substantial blow with an emphatic 4-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Three goals in the final eight minutes of the first half stunned Liverpool as Hector Bellerin’s curled strike on 37 minutes, Mesut Ozil’s exquisite free-kick three minutes later and Alexis Sanchez’s thunderous effort on the verge of half-time took the game away from Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Jordan Henderson converted a penalty 15 minutes from time after Raheem Sterling was brought down by Bellerin but Emre Can’s dismissal for a second bookable offence 10 minutes later all-but ended the contest.

Olivier Giroud bagged his seventh strike in six Premier League games in stoppage-time with a well-taken, left-footed effort as Arsenal moved up to second in the table.

The result, which leaves Arsenal four points behind leaders Chelsea, is the Gunners’ seventh consecutive league victory as well as their seventh consecutive win in all competitions.

Liverpool, who suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since November, remain fifth, five points adrift of Manchester United having played a game more.
